Skáld had few complaints, though the odds seemed stacked against him and his siblings. He nursed, grateful, and was kept warm. He was jostled sometimes, elbowed by siblings, but they, too, were accepted with a sort of kinship.

When light crept into his eyes, he blinked blearily. No shapes really formed in his vision, only blurred shadows and patches of light. When he turned his head, the patches of light and dark were different. But when he looked at the same place once, twice, he noticed that it didn’t change.

Until it did.

Something dark moved, though he knew from touch that this was one of those who had been alongside him since before birth, before this life. He could not see colour or definition, but was dazzled nonetheless to see how the view changed when his siblings moved in the light.
