In giving Sapphique time to further accept or rebuke his presence down in the Sound, Svalinn chose not to show his face at their borders for the time being. He wanted to visit with Val and get to know more of the sirens on the cliffs, but he knew it was not the time to try and ingratiate himself with the grieving pack while they also prepared to welcome new life into their fold.
The raybearer prowled about the wooded area of the Sound, sunlight dappling his golden coat as he went. He silently followed the trail of a lame-legged deer he had managed to separate from her herd, as she stumbled through the trees in an attempt to find her way back to safety.

oops hello :eyes:
she could not say why she walked beyond the reaches of sapphique.
she knew what would be here. who would be here. still she carried a gaze of burning embers to find his scent in clusters. his scent freshest in a winded way to the forest.
he hunted something and she hunted him.
she followed the path he had made behind himself, but she did not bother to be as silent as he was ahead.

wishes do come true!!
There were noises behind him; too faint to be the murderous bear that frequented the Sound and too substantial to be an innocuous thing. Svalinn paused, ears up and muscles tightening as his lambent gaze scanned the treeline…
Then there she was. A vision of copper and windswept sand. Jorunn. He was as surprised to see her here in the flesh as he was to see her often in his mind’s eye. He couldn’t know why he thought of her in the same breaths as Sapphique, but she had somehow not left his roaming thoughts.
His body relaxed, fur flattening as he waited to see how close her waters would wash near him. His long muzzle gestured towards the trail he followed and there was a question upon his face. Would she join him?

she did not miss the tightening of his form. it would have been stupid for him to have not been prepared to have to strike if he must!
who said she had not come here for his blood?
yet he knew better than to hold such a posture when he saw her. nostrils flared as she sucked in the scent of both him and his prey. perhaps, selfishly, she knew that she could leave here with a hefty pound of this meat. even if she was not the most prime hunter right now.
her muzzle swung to motion him onward and she continued to prowl closer to him.

Wordlessly, she joined him, motioning for the brawler to proceed. Svalinn swiveled back towards the trail and followed it due south, away from the ceaseless churning of the sea. He tried not to feel overly aware of Jorunn’s presence nearby.
His large paws coursed over fresh tracks as his senses swallowed up the strengthening signs of a deer passing through with haste: broken twigs here, trampled snow there. His pace was firm although hushed, surprisingly light on his feet. He paused only when the creature’s trajectory would change, sending the pair of hunters traveling at a new angle.
The deer was soon in their sights, hobbling ahead at the quickest pace it could manage with its weakened hind leg. Naturally, due to his temporary companion’s condition, Svalinn took up the position that would put him on the deer’s stronger side during their charge, allowing Jorunn the choice of attacking the afflicted heel and lessening her chances of being kicked.
Eyes forward, he held only for Jorunn’s charge.

On your mark,he breathed.

he gave her the proverbial baton.
or perhaps she had carried it all along, come to guide him in these things. as if she had somehow known — and she didn't, but fate had not been too kind as of late. she liked to think it favored her above man though.
on her mark.
she watched the deer for a moment. a sharp pain bloomed somewhere in her chest. emotional and yet tangible as the physical. there was a fear that she would fail. not as quick as she should be. that with it would come embarrassment or blame.
the seawolf remained wordless, clicked her teeth with a swing of her head.
she took off as quick as she could and immediately felt the stinging, burning strain in all of her muscles. a body that cried for healing in more ways than one.
jorunn only focused on reaching that pale fur of the deer's leg, of feeling its flesh between her teeth. to become a provider once more.

Through the pain, through the physical and mental anguish, Jorunn was a work of art in motion; a mourning dove taking flight, an indescribable transformation into Artemis of the hunt.
Svalinn’s eyes followed the streaking line of her figure, propelled by a burst of strength and the sheer will to succeed. She carried him with her, her determination fueling his desire to make this one kill, prove this one time, share this one body…
As she latched on ruthlessly to the injured hind leg, the sunbearer set his weight upon the other one, his teeth gnashing into flesh and bone as the deer stumbled beneath the sheer ferocity of the joint attack. Svalinn moved his toothy grip up along the doe’s body, keeping her from gathering her feet beneath her as he silently willed Jorunn to take her neck and deliver it a deathly blow.
There was power in providence, just as much as there was in rediscovering one’s own vitality.

together they were strong.
forged in the blood they brought forth from the animal.
she would not tell him these things. never. he did not deserve to hear her praise his work or expose her weakness in her voice. he had already seen her sinew form, healing from the disaster brought upon sapphique.
that too had not been for his eyes but —
she bit, hard and fast. the neck crushed between her jaws. for if her legs were not as strong as they once were, she still had teeth. svalinn holding it beneath while she drowned it in its own death. there would be plenty provided from this one hunt.
yet she felt the rolling waves of exhaustion already from the exertion.
quickly pulled away from the freshly dead doe to slump down into a seat. gaze still heavy and strong upon him, even as she sought to rest for a moment.

please forgive me for this wait <3
The doe was unceremoniously cut down by their efforts: Sapphique and Rusulka in tandem, in spirit, in blood.
Svalinn stood back once Jorunn had released the deer’s limp crown, and he watched as she sank onto her haunches, panting from the expenditure, bathed red from her muzzle down to a bib of bright gore. She looked at him too, her eyes bared as teeth might, daring him to care about her, willing him to ignore the weakness she displayed after such a chase.
He did not look away, but came closer, bidden by an unseen energy – an undercurrent of magnetism holding the power to both repel and draw him near. It was just a few steps, watching her for a reaction to his approach, licking his bloodied chops in anxious anticipation of her rejection.
