River languished at the moondark shoreline, perhaps enjoying a respite. The fire had not lessened, but she was compelled to enjoy the brief return to solitude. She had gotten used to being alone over the years, and this night reminded her of the quiet, the lack of chaos. And with her many entanglements, she knew it might not be peaceful as this for a while to come.
The waves were far off from her chosen dune, hidden behind the ridge of sand, yet there was their distant whooshing to remind her that they were there. Over this, she heard pawsteps in the sand, and River pushed herself into a sit, craning her head to see.

along the white beach the dreamer walked. he was weary from another day with the growing children. his arms ached from holding them, moving them. his shoulder was numb where wilwarin had fallen asleep against him again.
wolf dreamer regretted nothing, and savored these sensations as part of his life's experience. he had no cubs of his own and had not expected to be around them. what a funny thing time could be.
he walked upon the snow and the sand, paws softly sounding. and when he came over a small rise, first a fragrance took him, then the eyes of the woman who sat there attentively.
beneath only the moon, she glowed in silken shades. her perfume awakened the masculine interest in him, but wolf dreamer did not react to it, staring instead at the golden threads which sprang up and out from the woman, pulsating. scintillating, as her body did for a man.
all one dream!
"it is very secluded here," he said quietly, kindly. "there will be no men." he did not even notice he had excluded himself.

He was dark as charred wood, his nape shimmering silver in the dark. River watched him idly, barely able to catch the glint of inkwell eyes. He had not approached in any decisive manner – no intent, to speak of. Her gaze narrowed upon him, rankled by his lack of physical interest. He wanted to talk! With that smell about!
His tastes, she assumed, must’ve been for a brawnier type than she. Either that, or his processing chip was fried.

Maybe that was the point, she snorted, dismissive to him now, though her belly clenched indignantly. She might’ve left it at that, but the frustration had turned her peevish.
If there are no men, then what are you? A eunuch?

"i'm a dreamer. or so i've been told." he really should bathe the reeking of chewed meat and milk from his coat, but he found the scents comforting, always in bringing to mind the snow shelter that had been their home for a long while now.
wolf dreamer did not try to move closer. he sat placidly nearby, lifting his head to picture the star web and its thousands of strands.
she was an illusion. her wanting smell an illusion. many men would come for it, for the dream between her thighs. perhaps she would let them lose themselves there. but what happened when the dream ended? a man left. a woman went on with children in her belly.
an illusion, and the dreamer was vaguely frustrated that his body wanted to engage. Wolf laughed, a clattering sound marked by puffs of bone dust. she's beautiful and you don't want her! she's all the way here on your shoreline, and you can only think about threads! Wolf cackled.
the dreamer closed his ears.
"are you hungry? i have a little caribou meat. and you're welcome to stay if you're wanting to rest," came the quiet kindness of his voice.
he wondered if cen would have accepted this woman's dream. probably. he was the kind of man who did not wait to seek illusion.

A dreamer?River scoffed.
No. This wouldn’t do. He wasn’t at all fit for her children’s gene pool...
…
…
So, then why did she continue to want him? Why did her thoughts race to endear herself to him? To find a reason for them to close the distance despite her disgust? Because of her disgust?
It appeared that the wound to her pride had not been deepened. Of course, she still wanted to rip him to shreds for his perceived transgression of wasting her time – but not before feeling the pressure of his arms around her hips. These two diametrically opposed sentiments warred fiercely enough in River’s mind that she quickly felt exhausted, essentially neutralizing her. Outwardly, the bronze gorgon deflated.
The kind of hungry I’m feeling goes without saying, she sighed, sliding back down into the sand. Though she was not in a position to detect his scent, he seemed harmless… unfortunately. Bluntly, she went on.
Tell me about yourself, Dreamerboy. I’d like to know a bit about the wolf who turns down a good fuckin’ time.

his smile was easy. "it's not — it's hard to resist. i'm still a man," he admitted earnestly, meeting the smoulder of the gaze removed from his rejection.
beside him, a small hide wrapping of dried meat. he moved the pouch, offering it to the woman. "i just see — beyond that. beyond me. beyond you."
he could at least appreciate her beauty, but outside the treacherous response of his own mortal self, she was lovely in the same way a flower was, or a sunrise, or a waterfall.
sensing she might not appreciate these comparisons, he kept them to himself. "you'll find a man who — a man with fewer hesitations. you'll couple. you'll conceive. what happens next?" he asked softly, rhetorically. "your children grow. you have a long life, perhaps more of them. and then what? then the end of your life comes, and you go back to the beginning. reborn. renewal. i see that process — all at once. for everyone, all the time."
his smile was wry. "keeps me distracted."
