Amalia obliged, humming a thoughtful noise before delving into her many interests. She was a scout and a hunter. She knew some of the healing arts. The dark-haired girl said that she enjoyed the way winter shifted to spring.

Kannoyak smiled at this. The white hunter hoped that he might see the beauty she referenced, when the white of the world gave way to greenleaf and the promise of new life. The man’s life had been spent in eternal winter. He had crafted the muscle on his back from running across the white hunting grounds. There would be opportunity for growth when he discovered the changing of seasons.

Amalia is not terrible, he insisted in his deep voice. Amalia has shared brightness and joy with this man. Kannoyak is pleased to listen. And he would have listened to the girl speak further, if she had not requested that he share about himself.

The white wolf’s head tilted.

This man is simple. Kannoyak likes hunting and trading and walking the new paths from village to village. A thoughtful expression found his face. Kannoyak likes the wind and the sound it makes.

Amalia blinked and then giggled when she jumped in delight. OH! I forgot I also love the way leaves crunch. I will gather them all up in a big pile and then leap into them.

She bowed her head a little shyly then.

It was nice to speak of her life of her interests with someone other than her packmates and her family. She briefly thought of Lestan, of icarus, of Reno and then quieted her thoughts. She would go see at least one of them later.

Amalia shrugged a shoulder. Sometimes, simplicity is the best types of things. THere is nothing quite like a starry night sky, or the way the sun rises, or the way it sets. Those are all simple things, but enjoyable, no?

Oh the wind can be scary sometimes, and it's hauntingly beautiful.

It was good to hear that the woman did not insist on some depth inside him. The white hunter had always described himself as a simple man. He did not need complexities. Kannoyak was a dutiful and hard-working individual who had built his life around his trade. There were no surprises in his days. He knew what his paws would carry him to do. While this may have seemed a quiet life, there was comfort in it.

Amalia compared a night sky to something simple. The man chuckled and nodded his head in agreement. She had many words to describe things. Kannoyak enjoyed listening to her speak.

This man has not leapt into leaf piles, he admitted after a moment of quiet walking, of pondering on the things the dark woman had shared. The pale wolf had grown with glaciers and endless stretches of white snow grounds. Kannoyak had visited villages in the trees, of course. He had only ever seen them in the thick of winter, bare-boughed and dark.

Amalia had traveled, perhaps not as much as her brother, but she had done so. She had met wolves of all kinds. Some simple some not, and their sister was simple in the absolute definition of it and she had spent hours with her looking at the flowers in a field. It was nothing to her and she saw no shame in it either.

She pouted softly. Then we will have to change this. You and me are jumping in fallen leaves come Autumn. yes? She smiled up at him a pleading look in her eyes. She would enjoy this game.

And we will swim this summer, because i bet you've never swam either have you? When it's hot and the very trees are sweating. It's otherwordly to just lay and let the water buoy you while the summer noises are loud and raucous. And sometimes if you're lucky the wind blows just right and you can hear your ancestors speak.

The man was touched to hear her suggest plans for such a distant time. She said that they would leap into the leaves when autumn came. The smile that found her features was bright and her eyes glimmered with her plea. Even if he had wanted to, Kannoyak did not believe it was possible to decline her wish. He had every intention of seeing it through.

Yes, he confirmed to her. The northern man’s deep voice was rich with warmth.

The dark-haired girl went on to speak of swimming. She guessed that he had never done this, either. Kannoyak shook his head.

There were glacier waters near the little river village, he shared with her. But they were too cold to swim in. If a wolf was caught in the icy depths, there was no telling if they would make their way to the shore. River waters were not deep enough for swimming. They were deep enough to swallow young puppies, though. The river had claimed a few unwary children.

Amalia was oblivious to the way her face affected the male. All she was, was excited for a future of fun. Perhaps she had a little bit of her brother's wild side, but nothing like him. No she had never jumped from cliffs into the water below, or ran full tilt at a tree to see if he could run up it and flip. Which he had learned, after many falls. That was partially how she had discovered the fun of both snow piles and leaf piles, she would pile them for her devil of a brother to try his ridiculous stunts.

Oh Good! A small dance in her step at the thought. It would be fun.

She grinned and nudged him happily. It depends on the river. Sometimes you can come across one deep enough to swim in, usually it is blocked somewhere.

Does Brecheliant have rivers? Kannoyak asked her. His white head shifted curiously.

The man would like to see one that was deep enough for swimming. Though winter still hung on the air, he had felt the shift in temperature. Some days would grow warmer and melt at the snow. Others would leave the world dripping with rain that would freeze in the frigid hours of the night. There was a shift in the feeling of the world. The white wolf understood that the seasons would bring new life.

Plum eyes searched their target. The duo had made good timing. Their pace was easy and swift enough to pass the earth beneath their paws. The conversation came easily from the dark-haired girl. Kannoyak had a great skill for listening.

Does Amalia have a husband? he asked quite suddenly.

She wiggled with delight. We do, we also have a giant Lake! It's so pretty! I came when we were turning from fall into winter so I didn't get to enjoy it yet, but I will be excited too soon enough. There are rivers and forests and small caves. It's truly so pretty. But none of the rivers are deep enough for swimming that we will have to go further downland.

She had felt spring on the air. Soon there would be baby animals, and wolf babies, and there would be new growth and another year would pass and Amalia thought about it. She needed to find some herbs to supress her heart now that she realized.

She blinked surprised and gave a small breath laugh. No, no husband, wife or lover. Just me.

The way she described her home made it sound like a lush paradise. Kannoyak could see why she would share its beauty with excitement on her tongue. The white hunter hoped that she would show him some of the places she had mentioned. He did not know if her village would allow an outsider in their midst, even temporarily.

Kannoyak would bring them meats and furs. It would be a sign of good faith, he thought. If he could bring gifts to their home, they might allow him to visit the dark-haired woman.

Amalia’s answer gave the man a satisfied feeling of warmth in his belly. She did not have a husband or a lover. It was surprising to him. She seemed to be the picture of a perfect wife. There was brightness and warmth in her actions, in her words. The white wolf wondered if the wolves around her could not see it.

Is there a bride price? he asked next.

Amalia loved her home. She still felt a bit misplaced, mismatched or what have you. She didn't know what it was that caused her such a feeling of unsureity, but it was what it was.

Our leaders are Maia, and Treva. it is a counsel ship of sorts.

Amalia didn't know if anyone had noticed her. There had been brief likings of attraction for her to Lestan, To Reno, to Bridget, but nothing had come of it and they had quickly dissipated.

She blinked in confusion. What is a bride price? I've not heard of one so probably not.

She briefly wondered why he asked, but she continued to show him the edges of the territory. Pointing out things he could see from the area they were in. She didn't know if they could pass through, but she was content to show him her world, if nothing else by words. Her tail weaving gently behind her.

The dark-haired woman did not know what a bride price was.

Kannoyak faltered in his steps. His plum eyes shifted away from the bright features of her face. Would it have been assuming of him to ask? Faced with the prospect of explaining it to her, he wasn’t certain that he hadn’t overstepped. They had only just met, of course.

In the north, when a woman is sought as a bride, the man must present gifts for her heart in marriage. Usually, these gifts are presented to the parents. They will name a price for their daughter and a man will fill the price for the honor of marrying her.

The white hunter gave a smile.

Kannoyak thinks that Amalia is worth many furs and meats.

A compliment from the northerner.

Amalia could muster a guess of what a bride price was, but she didn't want to assume to know what it was. And well she had never thought of such things.

Asoft chuckle. Well goodness! Thank you. I don't know if I'm worth all that much. she thought about it for a moment.

But shouldn't there be a husband price if the female seeks onw out? You seem like you would be worth many furs and meats too? Just on the color of your eyes alone.

Amalia demonstrated a humbleness that the northerner had never seen. He found himself smitten by her. In the same way that the raindrop woman had mesmerized him, the dark-haired sister of the storyteller had drawn him in.

She brought up a curious thought. Kannoyak blinked in surprise at such a query. He wanted to tell her that his parents would laugh at such an offer. They were proud of their son, yes, but he would not bring many furs or meats to their hearth. The white hunter was simple and the wolves of his village had considered him to be a hard-working, albeit ordinary man.

Amalia could purchase Kannoyak for one weasel fur, he jested with a deep chuckle.
