The wolf was, of course, the dutiful warrior and beta, Revui.
He had not intended to go so far from Moonspear that afternoon, and had kept to the lowlands for the better part of the morning. There was much to be done in anticipation for Hydra's children; he would be there to guard them and to raise them, as his sister and idol had done for himself and his brother. It was only out of a desire to protect his family that Revui found himself lurking in the foothills of the mountain. He wished to prove himself as beta, to do something that would earn him merit and sustain his role; to prove to his parents they had made the right decision, and to earn him their praise. Perhaps if he could only prove himself again, again, again, they would see that the mountain was not something they had to fight over.
So the boy patrolled in a wider net, spiraling out from the northern border of Moonspear's claim until he was lingering along the northerly paths towards the glacier; it was not a place he would ever visit again, at least for a while. Memories of Yami's betrayal were dimming in his mind but he still felt the lancing hurt within himself, and was not eager to seek out any reminders.
When the scent of deer spawned between the trees he lurched along to investigate it. If he was not destined to encounter any rogues in the immediate vicinity of the mountain range, he could at least get a vibe of where the local herds were grazing - it would be good news, and could earn him praise just as easily as a battle. He prowled along the familiar paths, cutting corners when obvious animal trails made themselves apparent (and by blundering along, made them wide enough for his burly self).
His memory of the great white bear had become lost to him; in hindsight this would prove foolish, but Revui's interests and stresses were always immediate, and he rarely thought of the past or the future in great detail. The scent meant nothing to him besides being familiar but he was not bothered - nor was he immediately inquisitive - as his goal centered around hunting for the herd. It wasn't until the scent of deer became diluted to the point of vanishing that Revui realized his mistake, and tried to double-back in pursuit.
