The man didn't answer, but luckily Dragomir was spared the awkwardness of this by the prompt arrivals of Hydra and Arcturus, who hung further back. Not for the first time, he was struck with a question of where the other pack members were. He was aware in passing of Hydra's identical sisters, but he'd never accidentally encountered them when searching for the Alpha. The scents of other wolves were heavy on the spire, yet he hadn't run into many of them. Hydra and Arcturus seemed almost to be a two-wolf pack unto themselves, and he was once again glad they'd chosen to take a chance on him and help him grow.

But Jackalope ultimately seemed nothing and, presumably cowed by the number of wolves who came to greet him, turned tail and left. This left Dragomir puzzled. His tail flipped once with uncertainty and his ears planed to the sides as he glanced first at Hydra, then over his shoulder at the Beta. Am I doing something wrong? he wondered, since this was the second time now that a wolf he'd met at the border had turned away the second a leader appeared. Why he assumed it was his fault was obvious enough: Dragomir's self-esteem could use a lot of work still.
