Letting Teya walk away towards a future without her was the hardest thing Bridget could remember ever facing. It wasn’t forever but it still felt like a real goodbye. She knew when she visited that things wouldn’t be the same, and she knew this was because each visit would come with a departure.

Bridget would not force her presence in her life, and by now she also knew that Teya would never ask her to stay. She didn’t know why but that why didn’t matter when it came to what happened next. Teya would go home and try to heal and Bridget would face a future forever struggling with what ifs

She lingered with them as long as they stayed and afterwards until they’d disappeared entirely. She kept it together until then, but as the sun began to set and she faced the lonely journey to Brecheliant, Bridget fell apart. She was glad she’d at least succeeded in sending Teya off because she never would have wanted this to be the image her friend carried with her.

She would visit soon. The thought rang hollow in her chest, but she forced herself to her feet and onward into the darkening peaks. Nothing was set in stone. Tonight was going to be hard but every day that came after would get easier and easier to bear. Her heart wasn’t going home with her; that didn’t mean it was lost.
