somewhere off to the young lady's side, in a murkier, warmer part of the pool, a swarm of bubbles broke the surface.
the waters upheaved as a large shape rose up with less grace than a resurfacing hippo, brown water cascading over its broad backside. for a moment it stood still, glistening with dark sludge, until its face deformed and a fat, pristine pink tongue rolled out, tipped with drool.
gun shook out her wrinkles, sending stagnant pool gunk all around, her rusted collar jangling wildly around her neck. with a smaller shake she cleared out her eyes, and the dog lazily blinked, smacking her jowls, looking around without much interest.
her eyes passed over the wolf, continued, paused, then swung with the whole head as gun zoomed in on the female.
she smiled with an open mouth and a lolling tongue, thick tail swinging.
