new snow's cry brought his ears up sharply. his mate stumbled but did not flag, and so he put his focus back into the hunt, the kill.

blood weltered his mouth. another bite and he was rushing to the shoulder nearest him.

he took a breath but hesitated no more; mountain boulder leapt powerfully as he had done before, grabbing the nose of the straining beast and yanking its head down, down, his heels and claws and arms working hard to brake the animal as the others raced forward.

a strident bellow echoed across the land.
