Simeon broke a grin as Killdeer looked him over. He'd never been studied so intently, but rather than shyly turn away, the son of the sea wondered what his relative saw in him.
He never thought he looked much like either of his parents. He blurred in some line between them. But the thought Killdeer might've seen some of dad in him -
His belly tingled, and it was all he could do not to ask,
Cousins! It was close than anything Simeon had left, and he latched on to the truth of it.
It was a side of Caracal he'd never gotten to know, and he wondered if he'd been much the same as he was when he'd been their dad. He always had an ease about him, a playfulness Simeon missed more than words could say.
If only he could still be here.

do you see it?
Cousins! It was close than anything Simeon had left, and he latched on to the truth of it.
Did you grow up together, then?he pitched his ears forward, an eager shuffle in his paws,
what was he like when you were kids?

I'm so glad we met, too,he said, his chest turning at the news his cousin shared,
man, I'm sorry about your dad, too.And yet, it made him feel oddly seen to know Killdeer had faced the same things as him, and came out on the other side as the kind wolf who stood before him now. He took strength from that.
How is the rest of your family doing now? Your siblings, your mom...he paused.
Mine kind of fell apart after dad died. Last I saw them was on the coast a couple of moons ago, but no one was really the same. That was when Gramma Towhee had sunk to the sea herself - but her death was still too fresh for Simeon to mention.
