the smell and the calls of gulls drew sobeille in first; though fog heavily blanketed the coast, her nose showed her where to go.

by the time her feet hit sand the fog had rolled out, the morning skies a muted hue of peach and cold blue.

its length must have spanned fifteen wolves at least; its sides so high she would need six of her stacked tall to see over it. and the meat! so much of it that its sides had collapsed in on itself, leaving a framework of bones jutting from where muscle had once been.

sobeille picked warily around it, gulls scattering only to arc their wings and land back once she'd passed them.

she stopped by its head where teeth -- if she could call them that -- were bared from a mouth contorted by death. her gaze traveled to its eye -- so rounded and full of immeasurable depths that for a moment, sobeille was transported to the moon pool in the grotto.

a chill raked her spine as she measured the span of that impressive organ; wondering what things it had seen in the deep.
