crimson plattered the earth in splotches. melting snow gave way to mud. sun eater groaned from where he held c'ede outside the snow shelter he had built.
only some minutes had passed since the others had sped into the night, but he had given no order for pursuit.
when he stirred again, it was to pull the edge of a soft caribou hide more tightly around his son. "she abandoned you, my ivory piece."
and that was all his son would know.
"@Dark Fang. @Meleeys." he did not know where @Sulukinak had taken ghe'naya, but his niece would understand that the saatsine could not remain there. "we move. find sivaak and suliya. ask her to nurse c'ede," he instructed first of his brother.
then to their sister, who had fought the one no longer recognized among their kith. "they are injured for now. more will follow." his chin lifted, wind tasted over the reek of blood in that clearing.
"she will keep them safe, my wife." he stood to his paws, pained, swaying with the effort. "they will be raised well." sun eater licked crusted red from the side of his mouth. "and then i will come for them. there is no mountain, no field, no forest, where she will keep my children. the day will arrive. and on that day, i will kill her."
c'ede. he kissed the boy's forehead clumsily, handing the bundled child to meleys.
in the snow shelter was caught strands of fur, that of those who had stood with morwenna. carefully sun eater gathered these things, ensuring that ishmira, black hawk, other shore, and his wife might find their end in one of his rare amulets. a curse, those things.
a rage followed then, and he destroyed the entrance to the half-frozen den with no thought to his own wounds, stopping only when his ribs seized and he was forced to end his barrage.
a caribou fur which had once held fa'liya lay discarded not far from their camp. sun eater found ridgeback's blood there, silently adding the once-bloodhunter to his list. he had learned through pain and theft a new lesson, and plucked several of the stained hairs from the hide, adding them among the others.
a final glance in the direction morwenna had gone before kusax̱asaa raised his head. "the sea."
but not through the taiga.
his first step was toward the mountains.

briefly he had tended to the wound where traitor's teeth had wrended his shoulder. slathering in the crushed poultice of a flower he knew to hold medicinal properties.
he had done the same for brother, where wounds were most prevalent. seething all through, feeling the curve of non-ending fury as it palpated through his veins. it brought life where he felt most numb in the aftermath of a battle.
the ramblings now of a man driven to insanity and stumbling his way back to neutral mind, but it would be some time before then. he would give away his mind to secure the future of the white-furred calf in the arms of his half-brother.

Her younger brothers conversed. Speaking of their plans in the aftermath. Two children taken by their mother. Yet it was not their safety which they feared. She would raise them, this was true. However they would not be raised as Lanzadoii. Instead, likely so raised to hate this blood of theirs. They could not stay with their mother long if there was any hope for them to be Lanzadoii.
Meleys didn't speak these thoughts, not while the wound of Suneater's mate's betrayal was still so fresh.

Stronger now, without the threat of traitors at our backs. Her home-tongue uttered in a murmur as Dark Fang speaks of them mending. For now, Meleys only mended her wounds as she licked them clean.
