She had not expected him to go into a story, and it must have showed on her face because he paused and told her that it related to her question. She nodded, feeling helpless as she watched him struggle to tell her his story. He had been betrothed but wanted another—a coyote slave. Then he mentioned that his mother had killed her while she was pregnant. She thought her father was a monster, but his mother was worse, and she hadn't even thought that possible. She knew what it was like to lose children, but not in that capacity. To lose them before they were born—before their tiny cries could be heard when they took their first breath—it was too much to bear. Pain flickered across her gaze, and she tucked her head under his chin once more. Taikon, she said gently. It is okay. She understood now, and she didn't blame him for it. That is an awful thing to go through. It is understandable that you would have trouble moving past it, she explained softly. But it does not change things for me as long as it does not change them for you. She was afraid to pull back. Afraid that this might be the last time she was in this place against him. She buried her face into his fur and breathed in his scent to try and commit it to memory as if it already wasn't.
