Arielle's cry of pain wrenched Aventus out of his stunned reverie. His lips flew back and his teeth gnashed as he dove for Mahler again moments before Merrick's agonized howl rose over Rivenwood's pristine forest.

That howl was as a leash around his neck tugging him back to Ursus, but first he must ensure Arielle got free. He snaked into the midst of them, Mahler leveraging his huge body to batter and bruise Arielle while she held on with a vice grip. He was so proud of her. He was so angry with her. His voice was a bellow as he shouted at her to, go!

When his teeth closed, they latched on the thick muscle of Mahler's foreleg. There he dug in, gripping tightly before wrenching his body backward. His shoulder and side both screamed with pain, hindering him from committing fully; if he had, he might have succeeded in popping it out of its socket or even breaking the bone. Instead, Mahler would suffer a sprain and Aventus would suffer the consequence of taking the beast's attention upon his head once more, but Arielle would be free.

And then he would let go. And then he would run for what he was worth, lest he die here in these woods.
