He had not yet seen, nor had he fully heard, beyond the muffled whispers and words spoken above, and behind, and before him, all around him. But today the murmurs of his mother stirred something deep within Simeon’s heart.

A yearning. A reaching. Something beyond the grasp of his little paws of earth and sand —

— yet he reached out to grasp — and he cried, knowing and overwhelmed —

And then, someone kicked him, and rocked him from his mother’s side. Away from warmth, security, that awesome sense of something too great for him to grasp.

And like the earth, Simeon jostled against the brother who’d struck him, wrestling back with anger and gummy gnaws, as heaven fleeted from his forethought like dew.
