a sickening fulfillment began to spread its oilslicked hands within soto. while chaos upends around him, this was his element — misery, blood, disorder — and his blood sings with fierce vindication to at last see the cartel’s pugilistic brand of grisly justice come full circle.

in this moment of heightened pride and hungry anticipation, soto fails to see a fox-faced figure in the shadows watching it all.
