passing a curled snake whose scales glittered by the evening sun, soto found the three of them by virtue of safiya’s harsh voice. his gaze fell to the black pelted man immediately, wondering what he must do to cut him down if it came to it.

but it’s the woman holding safiya’s attention; she’s pale as eider down, possessing cutting eyes, and an underbite soto has never seen before.

he does not break cover. remembering safiya’s lesson with the mountain cat, he observes — giving her the ground to do as she wished.
