grumbling behind him announces she's very hungry, which presses soto even more to find food. he's not an altruist, but he is a chauvinist -- feeding her might earn him some measure of excitement at a later time.

at the foot of a battered oak, soto detects small traces of scent. turkey. stalking around the tree, he finds a mount of pale excrement that announces longstanding presence here.

it's then he looks up, and sees an equally ancient tom gripping the spread limbs of the tree, beady eyes peering right back at the pair of unwelcome predators at his doorstep.
