no puedo. soto repeats, withering under the sudden coldness in towhee's sunlit gaze. 

did she not notice their son's scent? he jerks his head again in a pay-attention gesture, falling silent shortly after to parse what he extracted from tone was surely an accusation.

he scans her face, finding no measure of comfort and unable to completely parse what she'd said. unfortunately, he focused on the wrong part of the sentence. why had she mentioned fiamma? did she think -- 

shaking his head, soto stands firm. fiamma esta muerta. the knowledge of that curls around his heart like the very asp that ended her life.
