There was an eruption of sound from somewhere aft, drawing Reyes' attention immediately. He moved as if possessed by a pointing hound's spirit; eyes wide, head up, ears pivoting to follow that sound as it flowed rhythmically from spot to spot. His pace increased as the sound got louder, until a pronghorn came bursting from cover.

It saw him and pivoted sharply; it was then Reyes saw something similar in build, but somehow lower-slung and almost supine, lunging behind it. It looked like a deer in its own right and held the colors of knotted bark across its body. There was no time to decide what to do — he ploughed through the green after both creatures.

The pronghorn was young and fleet-footed. It knew this forest better than Reyes and was soon dispersing from the pursuit and bounding for freedom. The other shape — the emaciated looking doe — collapsed not long after that, eyes seemingly following the escaping shape.

Reyes circled back when he found he could not keep up with the true target; not knowing that the other was a canine, only a reedy thing too sick to fight back, he descended upon it immediately and made to reach for its throat.
