If it'd been him, Eljay knew for sure he wouldn't have been able to do anything, either. He knew that he would've probably been dead because maybe he wouldn't even have been able to run. It was hard to explain to Maia just how brave she'd been and how happy he was to see her alive after all that happened. He was certain that there would've been other wolves who hadn't survived against someone like that.

Eljay also didn't really know that Maia wanted to be a brave Valkyrie. He did think she was pretty brave, but he also thought it was totally normal to run away from the situation she'd been in. Why was she beating herself up over this? To him, it made no sense, which was why it was so hard to say something uplifting about it.

Maia, you're not useless at all. I don't know much about fighting, but it sounds like a horrible situation and you were very brave just to be able to run and get out of there at all. Eljay looked at Maia, feeling the overwhelming urge to hug her because of how distraught she looked.
