All Welcome

Lane had finally made it around the mountain chain; even if she'd been blind, she could have discerned that from the nip in the air which characterized her Taiga homeland.

The last leg of her journey home should have passed quickly and without incident. The taiga was made up of snowy plains and freezing flatlands, not much for beauty but easy enough for travel.

However, the Sequoia Coast was intent on throwing one more curveball before it allowed Lane to escape home-free. Lane stood motionless at the edge of the ravine, staring deep, deep down into the rushing waters below. She needed to cross the ravine to make it into the Taiga, but... where?

@Gracious for reference :D

This place was different from all the other places.

That's just how exploring seemed to be. No two places were the same. Similar, maybe, but never an exact match. She had briefly broken off from the older woman she had clung tightly to, keen to maybe find something they could share. Whether that be a new place or a meal.

Only to be greeted by a ravine. Deep and separating the land.

Except it seemed she wasn't alone here. There was somebody else who looked down into the depths too.

Carefully, she tried to head over their way. She had half a mind to call out to them. Then realized that could be really bad?! What if she scared them?!

So she just, kind of wiggled with friendliness and hoped that would be enough to catch her attention.

Her eyes traced the path of the river gorge northward, noting its disappearance into a patch of trees on the horizon. Trees were good. One of those giant sequoias might have fallen across the gorge, providing her a bridge across. That would be a decent option.

Lane then traced the river back southward, and as she turned, she immediately caught sight of the fluffy, white, wagging stranger. Lane had been a bit avoidant of strangers in last week or so, just because everyone seemed to have some judgemental opinion on her pregnancy that they just had to share.

In spite of herself, Lane smiled. She wagged her tail in return, unable to resist the other woman's infectious happiness. "Going across?" she called hopefully. With any luck, the stranger was a local who could impart the best path across the gorge and into the Taiga.

Uh, afraid not! Apologetic in her voice, as she neared the other woman some now. She looked...round! Although Oceane had been taught better than to tell a woman such. Especially when the girl had never had any sort of talk.

I'm adventuring with someone from the saltwater. She answered honestly. Head tossed over her should as if Gracious might appear then and there. Just them for now! What's across the way?

Editing in a conclusion, since @Oceane is inactive. Feel free to bring her by DFG for another thread if you reactivate her!

Oh, adventuring! That sounded incredible.

Lane smiled, knowing she'd found a kindred spirit. She might have asked to join the woman and her partner from the saltwater, if only she'd been free of her obligations.

Obligation did weigh heavy upon Lane, and I do mean heavy.  Lane had far too much, ahem, extra baggage to be going on any impromptu excursions. She probably shouldn't have even been on this planned trip, or that's what nearly everyone she'd come across seemed to imply. This milk-and-fluff coated stranger had yet to refer to Lane's obvious pregnancy, and that scored her quite a few points in the tired mother's eyes.

"The taiga," Lane answered, a little wistfully. "My home."

Equal parts pride and longing were attached to the word home, which took Lane aback. Was this what it felt like, to have a home?

"I live in a pack called Duskfire Glacier." She inhaled deeply; she could almost smell the icy coldness rolling off the glacier. Lane swung her gaze back to miss milkfluff. "It would be a great place for an adventurer to visit in the summer, if your travels happen bring you inland," she suggested. Where better to escape the heat of the beach, than a giant hunk of ice?

...

With a farewell nod, Lane turned northward. She would follow the cut of the ravine up into The Tangle, until she found a spot that was narrow enough to cross, aided by a fallen sequoia spanning the gap. She would then strike out into the Taiga, beginning the final leg of her journey homeward.
