The pittering and pattering of raindrops on the lawn drew Aventus out of the den in spite of the chilly breeze that rushed down into their sleeping quarters. The first droplet that plonked onto his nose sent him reeling with shock, but once he flicked his tongue against his nostrils and realized it was only water, his head popped out of the hole once more.

Tap, tap, tap went the rain as it bonked him gently on his head, ears and cheeks. He watched, fascinated, as ripples spread across a nearby puddle, and before he even realized he'd moved, he was peering intently at the surface as the rain fractured it again and again. He was so mesmerized that when a toad hopped abruptly into the puddle and splashed his paw, he sucked his breath in with a surprised whoop and practically had a heart attack then and there.
