there was not a mask that could have hidden the utter shock and hurt which lanced across lestan's features. akavir was harsh, unrelenting, and righteous in his fury. the iota saw some great degree of the mayfair ferocity in his cousin then, and despite the lurch in his belly and the guilt in his heart, he could have borne it! truly and certainly! 
but then akavir cut him, as surely as if he had bled, and lestan did not know what to do with the rapidly growing sense of anguish and distance that spiraled in that moment. 
he said nothing, nothing when his cousin turned away, nothing when reverie touched him; he became a quickly cooling husk, stunned at the depths of the one-sided trust he had placed wholesale in a man he called family.
