She gathered the four corners of the old, worn skin together, forming the makeshift pouch she had been carrying for most of her life. In years past, this would have been an exciting time. She would have been thinking of children, of lovers, of the coming warmth of spring. This year, she didn't have the same pep in her step. Argent and Elentari were gone. Tiuttuk was her only remaining child here. It was difficult to compare this year to last, if she was being honest with herself.

Still, she wanted to mark her youngest daughter's journey into adulthood, even if it was belated. So she called the village together, the sound of her sweet howl bringing all those who lived here to one central location. Here, she would give Treepie a special gift: a reading of what was to come. It was not so much that the bones could tell the future, but they could provide insight into how one might observe the world. They could guide one to the questions they might want to ask themselves—and perhaps even others—at a fork in the road.

With the bones gently laid upon the ground, she waited for the others to arrive for this special occasion.
