chakliux settled into the village. it was not so different, not with the smells of winter-drying meat and leather and the sharp green tang of the moonwoman's herbs.
the seal-hunter went to firemother this day, the lone tree of red leaves on the western side of moonglow. he had brought a sacrifice of fish, which he lay before her. chakliux chanted a hunter's prayer and then turned away, meaning to find the herd in the grove and find its weakness.
but because he was a man, his head was turned by a pale figure. not the village mother. his magenta eyes looked directly and perhaps with rudeness.
