after she was sure the reptant man had departed, phaedra left aerasha to her leisure and sought out caintigern until she found him in a right distressed fuss. she was resentful that he hadn't even attempted to come to her aid, although the marten insisted adamantly that he was there the entire time and would have if he thought she was in imminent danger. phaedra felt doubt rise in her gorge.

blooming hell, she'd jumped into a bramble bush! 

but if she couldn't trust caintigern's word, whose in the world could she trust? despite his litany of apologies, phaedra needed to cool her head and so she sent him away with a flea in his ear. 

after which, she fled, running on knobbly legs that ate away the miles between her and agent pleakley, following the scent she and cain had left coming here. after a while, the cuts that arrayed her coat were starting to sting, and her white coat was a slurry of scarlet and lichenous burrs. with careful use of her teeth she tried to pull one from the tender flesh of her foreleg, but a pained yelp jumped unbidden from her throat and she quit fretting at them after that. 

presently, she regretted sending caintigern away. phaedra felt very small in this woodland, like there were several pairs of eyes tracking her every step of the way home. she shrank from the rustle of leaves and cast her gaze about, finding boogeymen in shadows where there weren't any and hearing eerie whispers trysting with her ears in the cool, late-summer breeze. 

without warning, a dark silhouette contorted by shadows shifted in the distance, intersecting on the path she intended to follow. she knew at once with an anxious wince that whoever it was would most certainty scent the bloodlet skin under her rufescent coat, so phaedra sidled to the edge of the path and hunkered low, instilled with a sense of dread.
