Kallik knew what it was like while pups were young. He knew Towhee would be with them as much as possible and since Maxim was gone, she needed the pack to step up and help out with meals and watching the pups. 

Kallik approached the den, a pair of rabbits clasped in his jaws. He stopped just outside and pawed at the ground, hoping she would feel the vibrations and realize her was here.
