He didn't say anything more, just offered her a weird nod, which only made her feel worse about everything. She could tell there was nothing more she could say or do, though, and she didn't want to push him anymore.
She let the patrol go on in silence, feeling like she had damaged something between them. It seemed life wouldn't allow her to have any kind of lasting relationship, so it only made sense that she would do something to mess things up between her and Mal. It still stung, though, and after a while, she just kind of wanted to be alone; she didn't want to sulk around Mal or add anything else to his plate.
At some point, she paused and offered a brief goodbye before trotting off over the borders and away from the forest. He probably wanted to be alone too, and she didn't want to do anything else to make things weird between them.
