Taki paced back and forth between Taikon and the opening of their den. She was worried about him. A dread had settled in her gut as she watched him slowly deteriorate, and she couldn't shake the feeling that he was going to die. The thought terrified her. She couldn't have been granted this happiness only to have it ripped away before she could really enjoy it. They were supposed to have children and he was supposed to come back in one piece. No. She told herself; she would not allow her thoughts to travel there again. They tried often, and she had to push them away and focus on what she could control. 

She had spoken to one of the leaders, Rowan, about finding help for Taikon, and he had mentioned he knew some things about healing wounds. He had agreed to meet her here. He would be able to fix this. 

She stopped near Taikon and gently nuzzled his cheek, knowing she would likely get no response. As she did every time she checked on him, she watched for the slow rise and fall of his chest to tell her he was still alive. She looked over him, exhaustion and fear etched into her expression like they had been there for days—because they had. Then she walked back to the front of the den and searched the forest outside, hoping to see the other leader approaching.
