few things caught sobeille's attention more than violence; and she watched, rapt, as two wolves very well versed in such things moved among themselves in the hidden rhythm of some secret dance.

sobeille's eyes darkened as she watched them both tear in, seeing the feral expression in the dark hunter as he rose, muzzle glinting with blood.

once again came that strange memory that did not belong to the girl: a wolf raising its head, blood sluicing between hooked teeth.

shaking out her fur, sobeille broke from her trance. she stalked behind sivaak, understanding in this makeshift hierarchy she was the lowest. first, the two caribou-killers would eat.

and then when they'd gorged their fill, sobeille might pick over the scraps. but really, all she wished for was the doe's velvet ear.
