the dull throbs in her abdomen increased. with no depth of knowledge in her tribe for what was happening to her body, sobeille fell to instinct.

instinct told her to find somewhere quiet and safe. her eyes were upon the sound’s powerful grotto, but sapphique’s carmine never made it there.

she fell against the broad trunk of a sequoia in exhaustion and pain, and slept.

a trill woke her sometime later. slanting sunlight informed her hours had passed; along the balmy breeze she detected faint traces of scents, both familiar.

more than anything she wished to continue to the grotto, but the pain lancing deep within her crippled her to the spot. gritting her teeth, sobeille fought the rising bile in her throat and rose.

she limped from tree to tree, sticking to the dappled shade. ahead, a birds fluttering wings caught her brief attention before another violent contraction seized her. she gasped and made the next large tree her goalpost; maybe sit there, rest a while, and continue.

but as she rounded the gnarled bole, a shadow rested against it. sobeille fought the chill that lifted every hair on her spine, freezing to the spot despite the pain’s urgency.
