he was hungry for the sweet flesh of the sea animals; he was excited to bring back chunks of juddering fat for marina and tullik, to show them how it could be melted in the heat and smoothed into their coats until the fur shone, how the thick grease provided protection from the sunglare of winter. he wanted to show them the small bones of the flipper, the longer of the arms, to have them soaked and softened into toys for baby teeth. he wanted to bring the skin of the seal to his lodge, and have something beautiful made of it.
he wanted all the wilds to know his pride.
lately, however, chakliux had been thinking of cormorant skins, a glossy jet waterfall of silken feathers that could be fashioned into a pretty waterproofed cape. a suk. 
one for each of them.
and he had been thinking of the good long grass which grew only where he would take the boys, pale green and soft mother-white seams within. good for cradles. good for placing beneath the skins of a sleeping-place where young ones slept.
in time he would teach all of this to marina and tullik; already he had told them much, but there would come a time when the long snows would keep them all inside and foraging was safer than hunting.
slowly, the seal hunter village inside moontide grew.
