The first day of Sea Hunter's life had been a peaceful one.

Already he'd established a routine: rouse, nurse, snooze. He adapted with ease to his new environment and did not protest to the fussing of adults around him who simply appreciated his new existence.

Luckily for his mother, he was an easy child. Sea Hunter lounged quietly on his back that lazy afternoon, milk-drunk and with his tongue poking between lips.

near samani's death ulaq had chakliux buried the three children who had not survived their birth.
that was five passed on, he mused with pain as he sat back upon his haunches and looked down at the turned earth over the tiny graves, far too small to engender anything in his heart but grief.
in silence the seal hunter returned to the lodge, where he brightened to see the living pups, now round and squirming among the pelts of their bed. little sea hunter he took into the crook of his arm and lay down among the five children, murmuring to their mothers that he was here for a time and they could do whatever else they desired.

He dozed, fat and content, even as an adult jostled him onto an arm. Sea Hunter nestled in the crook of his father's elbow and snored softly into the welcoming warmth of the embrace.

The newborn slept for a time, undisturbed, until he rolled sideways and plopped face-first on the soft pelts that lined the lodge floor with a thud.

a gasp came from his father, who scooped the boy up swiftly, and looked around. he had not dropped sea hunter, but it looked as so; chakliux felt his heart racing and held more securely to the child.
"already you wish to be in the sea, hmm?" the man joked, looking down into the closed eyes.

Sea Hunter did not cry out. He was unharmed by his little tumble, and as his tiny body was collected once more into his father's (more secure) embrace, he allowed himself to be held belly-up once again.

He could not see the bright eyes that smiled down into his short-nosed face, but there was comfort and safety to be found there. It showed in the way he reached up with his forelimbs in a lazy stretch.

"sometimes i wonder if it will be harder for you, my children, to be seal hunters when we are not beside the ice. but i will learn to show you both. we will travel. we will camp." he thought now in pleasant silence of the five children all growing to represent their own clans. five clans sprung from the lodge of tullik and marina and their husband, chakliux.

He was deaf to his father's voiced vision of the future, one that was planned out for him. Too little to understand it, to even acknowledge what life had in store for him.

There was not much that he knew, but he did know that his world was safe. He was a cherished thing, loved and fed and nurtured. This was all that mattered to him.

Sea Hunter parted his little jaws in another mighty yawn as he drifted once more to sleep.

ambitions paled beneath the slumber of a baby.
for a long time more, chakliux held his son, half-dozing in the pleasant warmth of their little nursery.
he hated to be parted from the babes or his wives or those delightful pelts; he kissed sea hunter and set him back at the side of the mother lying now with the pups.
his heart thrummed with fullness.
