Duck Lake come back to me

Finally the ice was beginning to splinter a little. Laurel carefully watched to make sure that no cracks formed around her, because all she wanted was a little hole to drink from.

Her head curtly turned sideways when she heard someone's voice. Laurel had been so focussed on her drink that she didn't realise someone neared. She stared the ice down, which didn't seem to budge despite splintering somewhat; it certainly didn't do what she wanted it to, at least. Then she turned to look at the wolf, who she recognised from visiting the borders earlier. He was a boy, though, and things were different this time around. Laurel folded her ears forward towards him as he addressed her as 'miss', which tickled her fancy quite a bit, and then asked what she was doing.

Laurel sighed and started back towards the shore, deciding to give up on finding a place to drink for now. "Hey, uh," she smiled softly while she tried to think of his name again. Something that sounded like Laurel. Laruh-something. "Larus," which was a complete lucky shot because all of the other options - Larun, Larut, Larum - that she passed in her mind didn't really make any sense for a boy's name. "I was trying to make a hole to drink, but I think the ice is too thick or something. It's not working. Do you know any place where there's running water nearby?" He was from near here too, so maybe he knew better. Laurel smiled sweetly at him, both to convince him to bring her to a place where she could drink and as step one of the winding-around-finger programme.
