Glaukos was on patrol. He was meant to be surveying the canyon with @Arsenio, the newest recruit, but the boy wasn't interested in following the rules at all times. He barely trusted the auxiliary that he'd been training with these weeks, and so he was less inclined to prowl the wasteland with this new stranger.
He had broken away from the canyon hours ago and had spent a decent amount of time finding a way in to the neighboring valley. This was where the battle for Nyra's life had taken place; the memory was an old one by now, but as he retraced his steps he felt a sense of power, a boldness, enter him.
The scent of other wolves piqued his interest and he deviated from his already random path, wondering if he would encounter more strangers today or potentially get his teeth wet. He'd found something: a gathering of coyotes trying to settle in the northern-most ridges. After routing these, Glaukos moved further.
He came to the end of his patrol among the higher reaches of the mountain range, spying down from a high place, where he thought he saw another — and so he moved hastily to intercept it, eager to loose some of his pent-up energy; it wasn't until he came to an even plateau where the woman stood, that he realized it was not another pest, but a wolf.
And something about her fixated him.
