The winter-brittle grass crackled beneath the dog's paws as he wandered the barren landscape. Nothing, nothing, and more nothing—quite unlike the verdant terrain surrounding the cenote. The early morning light had barely begun its slow ascent, nothing more than a pale rim light against distant mountains. Perhaps that was why his eyes missed the rounded shape nestled among the frost-laden ground until his paw brushed against it.

Intrigued, Machi crouched, unfurling the rabbit-pelt he carried for such occasions. Gently probing one of the bulbs from the earth, he split the orb in two, revealing dark, ink-stained flesh within.
