On one hand he agreed that an alpha's opinion was important, but in the context of his family he didn't feel inclined to respect anyone that didn't respect him first. Granted that he hadn't done anything respectable since his return (and uknown to him, he'd continue down a dark path and lose everything anyways), so there was no reason for anyone to respect him in the first place.
