The sound that penetrated the trees was somehow familiar and it was this which made him get up from his nap and go charging after it. Screech was hot on the trail of someone - and in a flash he realized he was tailing Terance of all people, and that put a damper on his curiosity but not his enthusiasm. He was on high alert but at the same time Screech was no warrior — he'd tried that in the past only to fail — so at most, he trailed after the darkie. With each moment he wondered just what would meet him at the end of his run; who could it be? Was the pack under attack? Should he even bother helping them?

It would be a good way to explore the strength of Sunspire; specifically, how mister Beta dealt with aggressors. At least, that was the thought during the ten-minute lope across the uneven terrain. Screech wasn't as fleet of foot as the other mountain-dwellers since he had lived primarily on lowlands, or most recently in a forest. They had a leg up on him in that regard.

So, he arrived late. He saw the dark figure of Terance intercepting a blonde - he recognized her as Seabreeze with a thinly veiled scowl - and then that brilliant flash of red; Screech closed more of the gap before he realized it was Redshank who was under fire.

He did the first thing he could: Screech tilted back his head and called out to his friend with a loud, if a bit gnarly, howl. The name of Redshank was more or less shouted from the proverbial rooftop — that would at the very least alert @Rannoch and maybe, just maybe, give the others a chance to stop and think. Whether that worked or not, Screech was throwing himself into the fray without considering his own wellbeing.

He tried to wedge himself between Redshank and the oncoming snaps, but the adults were so close that he likely didn't deflect many of them. He wouldn't attack, only intercept those teeth with parts of his own body - trying to protect his one true friend in the whole world. He almost didn't make it; the boy had misjudged the situation terribly and he didn't even see Treason as the third guard came careening on to the scene.
