Mal wasn't exactly the most clever at reading emotions, and he sort of assumed Cupid was just always gloomy. And things had been awkward between them in every other meeting, so whatever weirdness may have been lurking, it didn't strike Mal as odd enough to mention.

On the other hand, Mal was acting more like himself -- maybe not the version Cupid was familiar with, but everyone else was -- relatively upbeat with a light grin.
