AW but maybe @Ice Diver? I know we have one buttt..>!!
the evening air was chilling against star eater's furs. but this did not stop her from the preparation of hides that had been rapidly collecting. rather meek, afraid to tear her womb from the buck of a caribou hoof, she remained stagnant. ever the housewife.

it gnawed at her.

she had hoped for company. the pelt in particular was one she had woven with sinew and a charm, a shining stone that looked like ice. for the war chief, if she had so chosen to approach her.

the lanzadoii wife had been complacent. but she wished to know. she did not like being so stationary, but there was a warmth that she had never felt before.

upon returning to the river, ice diver had become something like a watcher. in this she hoped sun eater might enjoy long days with his new wife — and the time before children came.

and here was that wife. a figure of snow and stone. she wondered if keda would still be content when she was round with children, when those children must march along caribou — if those children were left behind.

the idea of motherhood seemingly weighed heavy upon ice diver these days.

busy?

star eater lifted her tail high in greeting, stepping forward with a confident grace as she brushed her nose lightly around ice diver’s neck, a warm gesture of familiarity. no, not busy, she replied, her voice carrying the faintest edge of amusement.

with a flick of her muzzle, she motioned toward the hide she’d carefully prepared, pride glinting in her whitened gaze. look, she said simply, her tone softening. for you.

she stood back slightly, waiting for the war chief’s reaction, her own satisfaction evident in the subtle curve of her lips.

LOL I totally got Sun Eater and Star Eater mixed up- edited!

Their return to Qeya River excited Ridgeback, who needed extra stimulation as much as he needed a kick in the jewels. He had traipsed along the borders where Ash Star had been slain, and roamed the foothills where sheep lived. This place summoned insecurities he’d thought he had buried, worries that he thought had been suffocated, only to find that the embers lurked just beneath the surface, like a fire overwintering in peat.

He found the pelt that Sun Eater had gifted them when they returned, and it reminded him of the offer the Chieftan had once made; the prize in return for a night with his wife.

Or so he thought.

Their return was accompanied as well by Keda’s burning, something even Ridgeback could not ignore- something that Ksura might have taken interest in, a year ago when he had sought out women searching for a fix. He’d given both Sun Eater and his wife a wide berth during that time- an easy task, as the Chieftan kept his wife secure- but he began to wonder what consequences there might be if Ice Diver’s season came too late. They would stop for two months for Keda to have her children, surely- but what if Ice Diver did not go into season early enough?

Nature could not be forced. Laws could be changed, but the way of the Caribou Hunters was not simply law- it was a lifestyle.

He had been following his wife’s trail, in hopes of smothering her with attention- perhaps in an attempt to persuade biology to change- but when he caught Star Eater’s scent, he switched into stealth mode; creeping forward like a shepherd approaching a flock of sheep, flattening himself where his scent might be carried away, and his low profile might go unnoticed. His ears lifted only slightly- just enough to eavesdrop.

He could only hope that he’d learned enough of the language to understand their conversation- otherwise, he might have to rely solely on tone.

oblivious to her husband who watched —

for her. she admires it with a close look. a roughened paw smoothed over the tended to furs. she halted at the shining stone that had been worked into it. a piece of permanent ice, woven in for the keeping. it is thoughtful work and it is the kind that ice diver was uncapable of doing.

there is an unexpected welling of emotion within her. she cannot look away from the pelt but her voice is soft and smaller now. unbefitting a war chief.

why?

why spend such time upon her? why make a gift so kind? perhaps this was simply friendship — she did not know much of such.

she could tell ice diver was greatful. the soft lilt in her voice, typically stoic and dark, had been unbecoming of her. though...she liked to see it. k'edghildza's grin widened.
gift. for your protection, she was not sure if her husband saw the same in what she had. how she was eternally grateful for what she offered them.
her husband was not a man of many words, gratuitous , so she would supplement where she could.
i want you there when pups born.
