the bear was magnificently fast. val had little time to register the commotion around him. he was aware of his maman and sister most of all — and it was them he tailed as they harried the beast.

out of the corner of his eyes he saw chacal flung aside. a cry tore his lips and it was this momentary distraction that cost him everything.

val felt air underneath him suddenly, and then he was lifted from the earth. he hardly registered the score of welts across his face and chest or the cleave of claw along his stomach — what he most sensed was this sudden shift in equilibrium;

trees and faces whirled upside down. val sensed the ground was suddenly pulling away. the faces he barely registered — was that erzulie hurtling towards him, or was he hurtling towards her?

val arched his back and tried to twist so his feet were topside, but the chance never came — val collided with something he didn’t see with a heavy crack.
