The scream was what alerted her first, but Mae didn't truly realize the danger until she was near enough to hear the sound of fighting.
She froze.
A million jumbled thoughts flashed through her mind. She wasn't ready. It was too soon. What was going on? She smelled blood. Blood. Someone was hurt. And that thought spurred her back to movement, to running until she laid eyes on the trespasser. A huge man. And Boone.
Mae closed in from behind, snapping at the backs of the stranger's legs with the intention of severing muscle and tendon in a bid to bring him down.
