Too weak to follow; maybe they'd thought her too much trouble to carry home. Or else this was Akavir's punishment, to leave her wounded and unwelcome among strangers who meant her no good will. And where was Cygnet?

Mae remembered the scent of her blood in the air. She hoped Akavir had taken her home.

He left me here to die.

Was it always going to be this?

The blind girl was only half-aware of herself, dizzied and filled with a crackling electric panic. One moment she was abed, the next standing, stumbling, nose finding the bundles of herbs left nearby. It wasn't what she wanted.

The search brought her further; she knew nothing of herbs, but recognized the sharp nose-burning scent of something forbidden as she pushed her nose into another skin. Something she ought not touch. Something she was taking in mouthfuls now, chewing in spite of the unpleasant taste, sick with the hope that this would bring the release she sought.

He'd left her here to die.
