Another few heaves and the tree split and began to collapse, but it didn't go all the way. Roots upended and so Glaukos had to stop and reconfigure himself in the best possible location for the job; meanwhile, the tree he had thought would be an easy clear, proved to be stuck. He went around one side and tried to get a better view - only to find he was too large to snake in and out of the gaps produced by the angle of the tree's haphazard tilt.

He didn't want to ask Tiuttuk to do anything in case the tree rolled, or something came dislodged. The last thing he needed was Alaric blaming him for a flattened teenage regent. He moved quickly to another tree, and then another until he found one that was straining beneath the weight of the rotten lean-to that had been created.

The soldier backed up a step or two, tested his grip on the soil, and then moved like a bull to ram his shoulder in to this smaller tree. A violent cracking proceeded this attempt, as well as a bloom of wood pulp, and as Glaukos ducked and lurched out from under the falling cacophony he moved to shelter Tiuttuk too, just in case.

None of this had gone as he'd planned and he wasn't keen on being blamed for any injuries.
