Riley had been scarce since Laurel had pinned him and struck him to the ground. The resentment in his chest only grew as the days passed. His own mother had hit him - had hurt him - had betrayed him.

He wanted nothing to do with the other wolves. He had no friends in Easthollow. He barely had a favorite punching bag. Louie was not much sport (and not very easy to bully) and Charles, well, being mean to Charles never made Riley feel any better. Not even teasing Leta made his spirits improve: and with no one, clearly, to console him, Riley turned to the wilderness.

His scent in Easthollow had fully faded a few days earlier. Riley had taken to traveling west as the sun sank behind the horizon -- and he had not once turned around.
