All Welcome
The boy had shadowed @Ashlar the entire way to the Hinterlands, moving as hastily as he could or as stealthily  - but never both, it was too hard to keep up with the adults and be silent.

There had been fighting from what Reki had overheard, although he had been kept far from it; he witnessed the aftermath, and tended to wounds where he could. The boy was becoming less and less squeamish around blood.

Some more garish wounds drained his color, and those he left for the more experienced and proven healers. For now, he tended to the more superficial wounds of anyone in need, at the puny medical camp that had been organized.

He hurried now between patients; a bundle of herbs clutched between his teeth.

After it all, New Snow was not in the best of conditions. Beyond the injuries gained, she also endured the sickness that had passed through the Rise. Her own energy was all but gone, but her resiliency persisted and New Snow continued to survive. The illness would surely pass as it had done all the rest.

But New Snow might look the worst of all for it, then.

Ashlar had tended to her more grievous of injuries, and even her muzzle. But New Snow, not the most patient or brilliant of patients, stepped away from the others to remove the stuff applied. When first it all happened, she had been too tired to do so; now, though, she was regaining her wits. Her natal pack had no medics at all; New Snow was uneducated as to the benefits of wearing green, and thought it an eyesore.

Not knowing she might be worse off for it, New Snow began to incessantly lick at her injured shoulder (that she could get to, anyway).

The wife of the white giant, who Reki had not caught the name of despite his time with the warring wolves, had slipped away from the makeshift camp. He had seen her being treated by Ashlar; by now, she had pulled the treatments from her wounds and the boy caught her obsessively licking at some of the remnants.

Oh, no! He burst forth and hurried to her side. Um, that's -- don't do that!! Please. His ears were slanted, his tail somewhere between a friendly wag and a nervous curl. Reki wasn't the most talkative person around the adults and he had become accustomed to working alongside his mentor without asking too many questions. It felt wrong to try and force the adults to do anything!

Here, can I... Can I try to help? He let out a small whine, hot-stepping around the woman's flank.

New Snow moved to lick old snow, to clean her tongue from whatever stuck to it. She mouthed the stuff as she sometimes would water to cleanse her palate. Her head turned to see Autumn Leaf approach her, tail softly wagging even while he rushed toward her. Sensing his concern, her tail stilled and she peered around them.

He whined, and his attention seemed to be for her. New Snow was able to put two and two together, knowing the company he kept. With a begrudging sigh and a wolfish groan, new Snow huffily resigned herself and stepped nearer to her with a low head. Her ears flattened apologetically, and her gaze revealed a quiet understanding.

She could be vocal, but she was grateful for the work. These things were so different than home, but different did not mean bad. It was... an adjustment.

He didn't know how best to fix... well, anything. But the boy was happy when New Snow agreed to settle, and he set about cleaning the closest wounds with careful links. When they were clear of debris Reki thought - of course! He could impress Ashlar with what he had learned so far. He could make a poultice and apply it to the wounds, and nobody would know New Snow had undone all that earlier work.

I'll be right back! he essentially burst, full of enthusiasm and good humor. As nervous as he was, Reki thought he was a good student with everything figured out.

He left her briefly to find some herbs. As he gathered, he noticed some of the plants made his tongue feel funny - or the sides of his mouth. There was a numbing effect Reki chose to ignore; he probably just needed to go quickly! The plants tasted wrong, or hot, or weird, that was all. Ashlar usually prepared the more complicated salves.

When he got back to New Snow, the boy had a bunch of assorted plants in between his teeth and was actively chewing. He felt very strange. Be rhh ther, he slurred.

As he began to apply the salve, Reki found his breath hitching. The paste didn't adhere very well (but in actuality, he'd swallowed more than he had meant to). The toxicity of the plants seeped in to him as he'd gathered - and now, as he tried to do the job of a medic, he was already inhibited.

I... I... He couldn't quite put to words how he felt, but, he was fading quickly.

New Snow waited like a good dog surely would. Her tail patiently thumped against the earth until the waiting felt long; then she settled onto her hindquarters. More time passed, and she slid to her belly; soon, her muzzle was draped over her foreleg. But she remained vigilant for the boy, and when he reappeared New Snow pushed herself upward and hobbled toward him with enthusiastic whines, forgetting her former dread of being treated.

She simply liked being in the company of her pack.

He spoke, stranger than before; New Snow could not understand to begin with. When his breath began to hitch, New Snow knew something was wrong; immediately she called for @Ashlar to come swiftly.

The hunter was not a medic at all. She could not save him if it came down to it. So she drew nearer to keep him aware and awake, lapping at his face and applying gentle pressure with a canine now and then to keep him roused from sleep.

Replying to save myself from the checker, lmao.

The longer they went without care, the quicker his symptoms began to progress.

His breathing was labored, a struggle that only freaked Reki out. The more he tried to inhale the less he could, and soon he was gasping through a closed throat; his eyes watered, and he shifted between awareness and illusion. The muscles of his haunches began to twitch and make him kick.

At least he wasn't alone as he devolved. New Snow was there guarding him, worried, calling for help; whether it would come in time was the important bit. Reki had ingested various plants he thought would be useful - not realizing how toxic some of them were. A foolish mistake by a budding healer, to be sure.

just a quick reply to this

Ashlar had dropped everything and run the moment the call went up, but they were scattered and he was busy. He was too far away to make it before the instant he arrived. He looked between the two, taking an instant to click why she would be calling when Reki was there…. before his stomach iced.

He was struggling to breath and twitching. Ashlar’s mind went numb but, for the first time in his life, his body did not freeze with it. Instead he hurled himself forward and began to firmly pump his paws into the boy’s chest, his back, his stomach. Anything he could do to get him to expel the thing causing this.

feel free to skip me if need be!

New Snow did not know what to do. She worried after him with coaxing licks to his back; whether it helped or not she did not know. In the ways that mattered most then, she was nothing like either Autumn Leaf or—

There he was! Her whimpers turned more urgent. But she need “say” no more it seemed.

New Snow stepped away to grant space and room, but did not quit the scene. Her worried gaze lingered upon the boy, but she knew the brutality of nature. He would not be the first young boy she had seen not make it to their first season.

Brothers lost. Nieces. Perhaps a daughter of her own in that number, though she might never know for certain.

The Bitan could only watch and offer her wordless presence.

finally wrapping this!! Permission given to pp

Ashlar’s desperate attempts finally paid off and whatever it was was expelled. The Hælend shuddered with relief and embraced the boy, holding him tight as he shook as well.

He would move Reki to nearer where he stayed to give him time to recover, then work on better showing him the plants to avoid and how to recognize them. Doubtless this would be a hard lesson to forget.
