Limit Two

she'd snagged a bur between her toes while a few others lined her forepaws in dotted chaos. it wasn't difficult removing the easily accessible ones, plucking them off and spitting them out in some ditch. but the one caught between her toes proved a challenge.

she was twisted in some odd manner to try and seize the nasty little bugger when the crunch of snow caught her attention. her ears swiveled toward the sound but her focus remained rooted on the bur.

just a little twist here and — ah ha!

the troublesome seed jerked loose, to which nephele quickly discarded. damn things were about as meddlesome as ticks were.

twitch knew the struggle all too well. burrs had a way of clinging to fur like a leeches, lodging themselves in the most inconvenient places—tail, the soft fur of the legs, between the damn toes. a constant nuisance.

she watched, ears flicking at the wet pop of the burr being freed, a faint grimace tugging at her mouth.

“should just burn the whole field,” she muttered, shifting her weight to gnaw at an itch along her forearm. “or yourself. might be easier.” a joke—sort of. maybe not very funny.

she gave her coat a rough shake, the motion sending a light dusting of snow scattering from her back. then, with a snort, she added, “bet there’s still one stuck somewhere. there always is.”

she hadn't expected a a voice to rise in the silence, and especially not so close. guard hairs rose from the startle, only to smooth a second later.

this was a new face, a pretty face too. "you think?" she asked in regards to the last comment before craning her neck to try and spot where another of the burrs might yet cling to her fur. she didn't take notice of any, at least none that she could spot with her own eyes.

she gave a slow twirl, eyes looking expectantly at the other woman for some assistance. "see any left?"

twitch’s brow twitched upward, surprised by the request. usually, her brand of commentary didn’t invite conversation—let alone cooperation. and yet, the paler woman twirled and twitch applauded herself briefly in her head.

her gaze swept over the other’s fur attentively, skimming tufts of snow-white and grays. she was pretty, twitch thought decidely, looked as if she'd came from the clouds themselves.

twitch caught sight of the last pair of burrs after a long moment, two stubborn burrs tangling near the back of her hindleg, half-hidden in the thicker tufts of fur.

“yeah,” she said, voice flat as she stepped closer. the stray extended a paw, claws clicking faintly as she gestured toward the spot. “back left. right there. dunno if you'll be able to reach,”
