wolves came now, faces of the recognizable entangling with the strangeness of many. yet none seemed so strange as the warm greeting of her mother, which delivered itself to the limping she wolf that unknown to astara, shared her blood. 

jealousy, or something uglier yet, dourly made its home in her heart, for astara yearned more than any for her mother’s approval and watched with reproachful intensity relmyna’s courting with the scarred she-wolf. she said nothing, did nothing, though she studied each of them with the glittering gaze of a spider, cold and full of dull wariness.
