He hadn't left the hollow since his return, but he was not oblivious to the goings-on of the group. Conversations held between the adults found their way to his ears, either in passing or between patrols they held; sometimes when someone came to visit the hollow for treatment, Karst would sullenly attempt to help them.

He knew nothing; he could do little more than stare as they fetched from the available supplies and tended to themselves. The knowledge would come if he let it. The collection that Evien had made - mostly dried herbs, some flowers pressed and hidden away - was beginning to dwindle.

If Karst let it run dry there would be no reason for him to stay there, to hold the space as his own, and he could not let that happen. So, he ventured out - finally - only to stare in to the vast white abyss of winter.
